Case 7: Construction of water tunnels in West Java
Type of Activity Water system technology
Organization Abdul Rozak
Area Tasikmalaya, West Java

Summary

The hilly area is dry and arid. The main problem is the availability of water. In 1970, Abdul Rozak was trying to block a small river in order to create a dam. The dam is used for irrigation and power generator. To increase the level of water, he piled banana trees and other trees. He then made new rice fields and perfected the dam and irrigation system. To broaden the distribution of water, he made water tunnel through a hill and dug a tunnel of 180 meters. The water way that circles the hill was finally filled with water. The people who first laughed at him started to harvest their crops 3 times a year and their houses are lighted by electric lamps.
