Until to year 2003, there are 2305 environmental monitoring centers (stations) of different level in the whole country, of which 1 is of national level, 39 of provincial level, 392 of prefectural level and 1873 of county level. There are 2795 environmental supervision offices (stations) of different level nationwide, of which 1 is of national level, 33 of provincial level, 400 of prefectural level and 2361 of county level.
Weekly Reports on the Water Quality of Swimming Beaches in Summer: Between June and September of 2003, the State Environmental Protection Administration conducted seawater quality monitoring for swimming beaches in key coastal cities, and promulgated 17 issues of Weekly Report on the Water Quality of Swimming Beaches.
In year 2003, 89.2 percent of the industrial wastewater discharge met the required discharge standard, which is 0.9 percent higher than that of last year. The provinces, 90 percent or higher of whose wastewater discharge met the required standard are Tianjin, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Anhui, Shanghai, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Hainan, Liaoning and Henan. The industrial wastewater discharge rate of Liaoning province that reach the standard increased 4 percent in year 2003.
In year 2002, the second stage mission of the Chinese Environmental Information Network, i.e. the local area network of 61 cities and the satellite communication network of 89 cities, which is sponsored by the Japan gratuitous help, was finished 2002.
In year 2002, 30 in situ automatic water quality monitoring station was newly setup in the Key basins. Form year 1999 to 2002, 73 automatic water quality monitoring station were built in the water body, inter-provincial section, international section and estuary of the basins as Songhuajiang River, Huai River, Hai River, Liao River, Yangtze River, Yellow River and Pearl River. The automatic water quality monitoring data of the Key sections of Key basins were publicized on the website of SEPA and some of the newspapers.
