Overview

WEPA Workshop on “Decentralized Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Asia”

Overview
WEPA and the Ministry of Environment of Indonesia have jointly organized the WEPA Workshop on “Decentralized Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Asia” on 14th November in Jakarta, Indonesia. About 30 policy makers and water professionals of related governmental ministries and NGOs from Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam have participated and contributed to the workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to share the technologies and management situation of decentralized domestic wastewater applied in WEPA member countries through a number of presentations at the workshop and actual site visits. In the workshop, participants discussed about the feasibility of decentralized domestic wastewater management systems in Asian countries. After the workshop, all participants had chance to pay a visit to a model SANIMAS project site of Indonesia government in Bekasi City. In addition, workshop participants attended the workshop on model project of Johkasou (Japanese decentralized domestic wastewater treatment system) organized by Kubota Corporation on 13th November in Jakarta.

Technical Session at Second Asia Pacific Water Summit: Voice from Asia for Better Water Quality – for discussion toward Post-2015 Development Goals on water

Overview
WEPA organized technical session on water quality management in Asian region during the Second Asia Pacific Water Forum (APWS) which was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand (http://info.apwatersummit2.org/). The Second APWS has an overarching theme “Water Security and Water-related Disaster Challenges: Leadership and Commitment”. This session aims to discuss the international and regional cooperation needs to improve water quality in Asia, in consideration of current discussion over post 2015 international development goals on water. More than 40 policy makers and water experts from different counties contributed to our session. Our session summary was delivered to focal area session of APWS for further discussion

A dialogue in Sri Lanka

Overview
Central Environment Authority of Sri Lanka (CEA), Ministry of the Environment, Japan and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) held a dialogue on water environment on 27 August 2012 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The officers from CEA and other related agencies in Sri Lanka participated in the dialogue. The meeting aimed to exchange views and experiences between Sri Lanka and Japan on water environmental management and identify areas in need of policy intervention. Experiences of Japan’s pollution control was shared and the challenges currently faced by Sri Lanka on industrial wastewater management and their possible solutions were actively discussed during the programme among the participants.

Overview
The session was aimed to share the experience of WEPA as unique partnership program and also discuss how to promote sustainable water environment management in Asia and its implications to other parts of the world. From the active discussion, a commitment to maintain the efforts for better water environment and an importance of WEPA which provides knowledge and experience sharing platform was reaffirmed. Experiences of the partner countries with WEPA such as that of Lao PDR have also been shared. Furthermore, the session was an occasion to launch the WEPA Outlook on Water Environment in Asia 2012.
