Summary
Clean lake water is the key resource that can ensure the sustainability
of development within the basin region. Partnership among stakeholders
is the engine of resource use reform, ecological conservation, and economic
growth. The recent partnership of LLDA with business and NGOs in its
campaign to join the Living Lakes Networks, a global conservation initiative,
demonstrates its vision of achieving world-class leadership in the lake
resources conservation and management.
Lake water quality has been monitored since the early 1970’s
and intensified to monthly readings in the five-lake stations. Annual
averages covering the period of 1990 to 2000 show that BOD, dissolved
oxygen, nitrate, pH, and total coliform met the criteria for Class “C” waters
standards to be suitable for fisheries. LLDA also conducts Lake Primary
Productivity Measurement at four lake stations that provide basic information
on turbidity and availability of natural food (algae) for fish production.
Based in regular monitoring and analysis, the water quality of Laguna
de Ba’i has been improving since 1995.
