State of water environmental issues
4.2. Groundwater in the study area within the Mekong River system (Takeo, Kandal, Kampong Speu, Prey Veng, Kampong Cham, Kamport, Koh Kong, and Phnom Penh Municipality)
The use of groundwater has two main purposes: domestic and drinking water supply and irrigated agriculture. Groundwater resources within the country have been the subject of a few studies but have not been comprehensively studied to date to the point that serious analyses or conclusions can be drawn. Most provinces contain significant areas where groundwater is used as the main source of domestic water supply. As of 2001, the withdrawal of groundwater for domestic and drinking water supply was approximately 2,147 m³ per day.
The delta sub-area, which covers an area of approximately 24,370.45 km², is located in the southern part of Cambodia. The Delta consists of eight provinces and one city namely Takeo, Kandal, Kompong Spue, Kampong Cham, Kampot, Koh Kong; Phnom Penh city and Svay Rieng province have recently been included in the basin area. The groundwater in this area is currently used for domestic and drinking water supply and irrigated agriculture.
